Wondering what to expect Friday night?

Here are more details about the event!

Fall Festival 2022 Friday, October 14 5-8:30PM @ SAP Elementary Forecast: 48-53F

Getting There & Parking The event is at school. The #3 and #87 buses stop at Raymond and Como. If you live local, please consider walking. If you drive, please consider parking several blocks away and walking so families with mobility issues or small children can park a little closer.

VOLUNTEERING & CONTRIBUTING TO BAKE SALE We still need volunteers to help the event run smoothly. We hope you will help out for a little while at the festival. Extended family and friends are also welcome to pitch in or keep an eye on kids while you volunteer. Another fun way to participate is by baking! · Sign-up to volunteer at the Fall Festival · Sign-up to volunteer at the Book Fair · Sign-up to bring baked goods for the Bake Sale

Is the Fall Festival inside or outside? Both! Book Fair, Science Scare and Little/Big Scare are inside. Be aware that it may be crowded inside - as always, some families may choose to wear masks. Everything else will be outside, so PLEASE DRESS WARMLY.

What is the movie? We’ve decided to run a series of shorts and cartoons, all rated G and PG. Because it will be the end of a long week and a very long day, we hope shorts will allow parents who have tired kiddos a chance to duck out of the event at convenient breaks. It will also make room for others to warm up, grab a snack, hit the Book Fair or just get the wiggles out and then join back in the entertainment without missing a beat.

Where will we sit for the movie? The movie will play from the bandstand area, facing the school. It will be clear once the screen is inflated.

What should we bring with us for the movie? It’s gonna be chilly. Please dress your kids warmly – it’s never too soon to break out the winter coats, hats and mittens in Minnesota! Warm kids are happy kids. Blankets for the ground are a great idea. If you bring lawn chairs, please sit towards the back so the tiny people can see well.

Will there be food at the festival? Yes! We will have bake sale items, pizza, cider freezes, water available for purchase while supplies last.

What should we do about dinner? We suggest you plan your own dinner – bring a picnic or grab something to go on your way to the festival.

How can I get tickets? Tickets are $1 each. We will have tickets on sale the before school on Thursday the 13th, before school on the 14th and at the event on the 14th. Tickets are cash or credit card.

Why tickets? We use tickets in certain areas to keep lines moving smoothly.

How many tickets will I need per child? We estimate that you might want 5 to 10 tickets per child.

For Budgeting:

No Cost: Movie, Pumpkin Run, Photo Booth, Scarecrow Garden & SPPL BookMobile

No Cost, Sponsored by SAPSA: Popcorn & Cracker Jacks for Movie

1 Ticket: Water, Bounce House, Make-a-Craft, Button Making, Science Scare, Little & Big Scare

2 Tickets: Pizza (Slice) and Cider Freezes

1-3 Tickets: Bake Sale Items

Cash or Card: Spirit Wear and Ticket Sales

Cash, Card or Scholastic e-Wallet: Book Fair

Can I pay with a debit or credit card? For sure! Tickets, Spirit Wear and Book Fair are also cash or card.

Where does the money go? Funds cover the cost of the event; additional funds raised support St. Anthony Park Elementary School!

Social and Emotional Resources at SAP

In addition to our wonderful school counselors, Errol Edwards and Kelly Lynch, and our behavior intervention specialist Ashley Cropsey, we have some additional staff and resources to support our students. Our school social worker and school therapist would like to introduce themselves -

Hello Families, my name is Rachel Curtis, your school social worker, and I am thrilled to be at St. Anthony Park full time this year! I started work within SPPS in 2016, right after completing my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work at Concordia College (Moorhead, MN.). Most recently I completed my Master’s Degree in Social Work at Augsburg University (Minneapolis, MN) in 2020. Outside of work, I am enjoying being a newlywed, being social with friends, and taking my two puppies on walks around my neighborhood.

This school year, I am available to support special education and general education students explore their social-emotional wellbeing as well as be a resource for them during times of high stress or upset. Another one of my roles in the building, is to coordinate our school based mental health program. Alicia Vang, from Nystrom & Associates Counseling, will be offering school-based therapy for students this school year and is in our building two times a week. School-Based therapy is a convenient way to provide mental health therapy to students. It removes barriers such as transportation and scheduling difficulties which often stands in the way of students receiving therapy. It also allows for students to work with therapists directly in the environment in which they often struggle the most; in school. Our therapist can provide individual therapy, assessments and referrals for additional services. In addition, there is the possibility of seeing the child and the family outside of regular school hours. A student may be a good fit for school-based therapy if they are experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety, they have behavioral problems in the classroom, you notice a change in their behavior (they become more quiet/withdrawn or more disruptive, they begin missing assignments, etc.), or there have been recent stressors that are concerning. If you would like more information or if you are interested in this service for your student, please contact me directly at rachel.curtis@spps.org or my phone at 651-744-7962. I would be happy to discuss this resource with you and determine if a referral would be appropriate. Finally, please enjoy this monthly newsletter from the School Based team at Nystrom and Associates, on Sleep Hygiene HERE. I am so grateful to have a partnership with Nystrom and look forward to sharing more newsletters with you in the future.

Hello Everyone, My name is Alicia Vang and I graduated with my Masters in Social Work. I am currently a School Based Therapist with Nystrom & Associates. I enjoy working with children and guiding them into finding their strengths and learning to persevere in this world. When I am not working, I enjoy hiking, walking with my fur-baby, and camping. Thank you for taking the time to get to know me and I hope I get to meet you as well.

Dexter's Corner __________

Greetings! In case you missed my previous column, I’m Dexter Junior, the guinea pig that lives in Mr. Schrankler’s science room!

Did you know that everyone has big feelings sometimes, even little guinea pigs like me? Sometimes I get so jumbled up that I'm not even sure WHAT I'm feeling! It's so nice to be able to waddle down the hall to talk to our counselors, Mr. Edwards or Ms. Lynch, or to one of the other members of our supportive staff. Parents and kids, don't be shy to reach out to them - we could all use some extra support sometimes!

Well, that's it for now, Wolf Pack. As we guinea pigs say, I wish you a good wheek, wheek, wheeeeek!

A huge thanks to everyone who came out for School Clean Up last weekend. We're especially grateful to SAP parent Michael Bloyer for planning this effort. Weeds were pulled, donuts were shared, and amazing moths were found! It looks great, and we'll be ready for planting in the spring.

Upcoming Events

- Friday, September 30 - Family Friday

7:30am

Please join us for our first Family Friday of the school year! This is an opportunity for families to accompany students to their classes at drop-off, say hello to teachers, then enjoy coffee and conversation outside with other families and staff.

Plan on coming? Please arrive a little earlier than normal, park a few blocks from school, and walk the rest of the way. This will help keep traffic clear, and a short walk with your student can be a great way to connect and start the day together. Bringing your own mug from home will help us minimize waste and clean-up (but we'll have cups here too).

We still need some volunteer support!

Thank you all so much, we can't wait to see you there!

Scarecrow Garden at the Fall Festival

Did you know scarecrows are traditionally created by farmers to scare birds away from crops that have gone to seed in the autumn? They are also a fun way to enjoy the season and recycle common items in a fun and creative way. Some people even like to make funny or spooky sculptures or characters with their scarecrows! This year, we will be setting up a Scarecrow Garden at our Fall Festival & Book Fair on October 14th. Members of the school community can create a scarecrow and bring it to the Scarecrow Garden to show off during the event. Big Kids (aka Adults) can create a Scarecrow, too. Purchase a Scarecrow Frame Kit. Making a scarecrow frame can be tricky if you don't have tools or time to make it to a hardware store! We have pre-cut, easy to assemble scarecrow frame kits that we will mount on rebar at the event for you. These are available for $15-$21. We also have a few sponsored (free) frames available. These kits have easy to assemble pieces, joints and instructions. Just dress & stuff your scarecrow, give it a head and accessories with materials you provide.
